Introducing the Modernize Traditional Apps Program

Today at DockerCon, we announced the Modernize Traditional Applications (MTA) Program to help enterprises make their existing legacy apps more secure, more efficient and portable to hybrid cloud infrastructure.  Collaboratively developed and brought to market with partners Avanade, Cisco, HPE, and Microsoft, the MTA Program consists of consulting services, Docker Enterprise Edition, and hybrid cloud infrastructure from partners to modernize existing .NET Windows or Java Linux applications in five days or less.  Designed for IT operations teams, the MTA Program modernizes existing legacy applications without modifying source code or re-architecting the application.

The First Step In The Microservices Journey
In working with hundreds of our enterprise IT customers the last couple years, when we sit down with them one of the first questions they inevitably ask is, “What is the first step we should take toward microservices?”
Through experience we have found that, for the vast majority of them, the best answer is, “Start with what you have today &; with your existing applications.”   Why is this the right place for them to start?  Because it recognizes two realities facing enterprise IT organizations today: existing applications consume 80% of IT budgets, and most IT organizations responsible for existing apps are also tasked with hybrid cloud initiatives.
Seeing this pattern repeatedly, we developed this program as a solution for IT operations teams to rapidly address both realities.
Bringing Portability, Security, and Efficiency to Legacy Applications
The heart of the program is methodology and automation tooling to containerize existing .NET Windows or Java Linux applications without modifying source code or re-architecting the app.  Then, using Docker’s Containers-as-a-Service (CaaS) offering, Docker Enterprise Edition (Docker EE), IT operations teams deploy and manage the newly-containerized applications onto partners’ hybrid cloud infrastructure.
The result?  Customers participating in the private beta of the Modernize Traditional Apps Program during the last six months report the following benefits:

Portability.  Customers share that previous attempts to move legacy applications to hybrid cloud infrastructure took months and suffered from high failure rates.  In contrast, thanks to the ability of containers to package together an application and its dependencies, MTA’d legacy applications can be moved in weeks.
Security.  Docker Enterprise Edition (Docker EE) improves the security profile of existing legacy applications through container-based isolation, automated scanning and alerting for vulnerabilities, and integrity verification through digital signatures.

Efficiency.  Customers realize significant improvements in the total cost of ownership (TCO) in both CapEx and OpEx of their existing legacy applications.

To give specific examples, today at DockerCon private beta program participants Northern Trust and Microsoft IT both shared their experiences and results:

Northern Trust, a leading international financial services company, experienced  deployment times that were 4X faster and noted a 2X improvement in infrastructure utilization;
Microsoft is not only a partner in this program; their IT organization is also a beta customer.  Microsoft IT increased app density 4X with zero impact to performance and were able to reduce their infrastructure costs by a third.

Program Powered By Partners
The goal of the program is to accelerate the time-to-value for customers.  To achieve this, we worked closely with our partners to define tightly-scoped, turnkey solutions consisting of consulting services, Docker Enterprise Edition (Docker EE) software, and hybrid cloud infrastructure.

Avanade and Microsoft Azure.  Avanade’s consulting services provides a structured approach for evaluating the customer’s existing legacy applications, containerizing, and deploying and managing the containerized apps on Microsoft Azure hybrid cloud using Docker EE.
Cisco.  Cisco offers consulting services and their UCS converged infrastructure products for MTA Program customers.  Used together with Docker EE,  the solution helps customers take advantage of Cisco’s policy-based container networking technology, Contiv, in deploying containerized apps to hybrid cloud environments.
HPE.  For hybrid cloud solutions employing composable infrastructure, HPE offers MTA Program customers consulting services and converged infrastructure products together with Docker EE to deploy and manage containerized legacy apps.

Docker Enterprise Edition Empower Customers to Control the Journey
These turnkey bundles make the MTA Program a quick, efficient solution for IT operations taking the first step toward microservices.  And with the modernized applications being managed by the Docker CaaS offering, Docker Enterprise Edition (Docker EE), customers have control over the journey’s pace and direction &8211; how fast or slow as well as which application functionality to re-factor into microservices versus which to leave as-is.  This flexibility stems from Docker EE’s ability to manage the lifecycle of any containerized app, from 10-years-old legacy to just-released new microservices-based and anything in between.

We are excited to announce the Modernize Traditional Apps Program today at DockerCon with partners Avanade, Cisco, HPE, and Microsoft and share the stories from IT organizations who are making their existing legacy applications portable, secure, and efficient.  Use the links below to learn more about how the MTA Program from Docker and its partners can help breathe new life into your existing legacy applications.

Docker Gives Back at DockerCon

is actively working to improve opportunities for women and underrepresented minorities throughout the global ecosystem and promote diversity and inclusion in the larger tech community.
For instance, at DockerCon 2016, attendees contributed to a scholarship program through the Bump Up Challenge unlocking funds towards full-tuition scholarships for three applicants to attend Hack Reactor. We selected two recipients in 2016 and are excited to announce our third recipient, Tabitha Hsia, who is already in her first week of the program.
In her own words:

“My name is Tabitha Hsia. I grew up in the East Bay. I come from an art-focused family with my sister being a professional cellist, my mother being a professional pianist, and my great grandfather being a famous Taiwanese painter. I chose Hack Reactor because of their impressive student outcomes and their weekly schedule. Already in my first week, I have learned a ton of information from lectures and their wealth of resources. I have enjoyed pair programming the most so far. While the lectures expose me to new topics, applying the topics to actual problems has deepened my understanding the most. After graduation, my long-term goal is to become a virtual reality developer. Seeing the integration of the solutions and tools into society excites me.”

DockerCon Gives Back
Following the success of previous DockerCon initiatives promoting diversity in the tech industry, we’re proud to continue our efforts at the upcoming DockerCon 2017 in Austin.
With this year’s program called DockerCon Gives Back, we’re recognizing four organizations that are doing outstanding work locally in Austin and globally. Attendees at the show will have the chance to connect and support these great organizations by dropping their token in their box &; each token represents a dollar that Docker will donate at the end of the conference.

The First DockerCon with Windows Containers

DockerCon 2017 is only a few weeks away, and the schedule is available now on the DockerCon Agenda Builder. This will be the first DockerCon since Server 2016 was released, bringing native support for containers to Windows. There will be plenty of content for Windows developers and admins &; here are some of the standouts.

Windows and .NET Sessions
On the main stages, there will be hours of content dedicated to Windows and .NET.
Docker for .NET Developers
Michele Bustamante, CIO of Solliance, looks at what Docker can do for .NET applications. Michele will start with a full .NET Framework application and show how to run it in a Windows container. Then Michele will move on to .NET Core and show how the new cross-platform framework can build apps which run in Windows or Linux containers, making for true portability throughout the data center and the cloud.
Escape From Your VMs with Image2Docker
I’ll be presenting with Docker Captain Jeff Nickoloff, covering the Image2Docker tool, which automates app migration from virtual machines to Docker images. There’s Image2Docker for Linux, and Image2Docker for Windows. We’ll demonstrate both, porting an app with a Linux front end and a Windows back end from VMs to Docker images. Then we’ll run the whole application in containers on one Docker swarm, a cluster with Linux and Windows nodes.
Beyond “” &8211; the Path to WIndows and Linux Parity in Docker
Taylor Brown and Dinesh Govindasamy from Microsoft will talk about how Docker support was built for Windows Server 2016. Their session will cover the technical implementation in Windows, the current gaps between Docker on Linux and Docker on Windows, and the plans to bring parity to the Windows experience. This session is from the team at Microsoft who actually delivered the kernel changes to support Windows containers running in Docker.
Creating Effective Images
Abby Fuller from AWS will talk about making efficient Docker images. Optimized Docker images build quickly, are as small as possible, and include only the components needed to run the app. Abby will talk about image layers, caching, Dockerfile best practices, and Docker Security Scanning, in a cross-platform session which looks at Linux and Windows Docker images.
Other Sessions
Check out the topics in the Agenda Builder for sessions from speakers who have been using Docker in production, and seen a huge change in their ability to deliver quality software, quickly. These are Linux case studies, but the principles equally apply to Windows projects.

In Architecture, Cornell University use Docker Datacenter to run monolithic legacy apps alongside greenfield microservice apps &8211; with consistent monitoring and management
In Production, PayPal are on a  journey migrating all their legacy apps to Docker, and using Docker as their production application platform
In Enterprise, MetLife delivered a new microservice application running on Docker in 5 months, embracing new approaches to design, test and engineering.

Workshops
Workshops are instructor-led sessions, which run on the Monday of DockerCon. There are a lot of great sessions to choose from, but for Windows folks these two are particularly well-suited:
Learn Docker. Get to grips with the basics of Docker, learning about the basics of images and containers, and moving on to networking, orchestration, security and volumes. This session will focus on Linux containers, which you can run with Docker for Windows, but the principles you’ll learn apply equally to Windows containers.
Modernizing Monolithic ASP.NET Applications with Docker. A workshop focused on Windows and ASP.NET. You’ll learn how to run a monolithic ASP.NET app in Docker without changing code, and then see how to break features out from the main app and run them in separate Docker containers, giving you a path to modernize your app without rebuilding it.
Hands-On Labs
As well as the main sessions and guided workshops, there will be hands-on labs for you to experience Docker on Windows. We’ll provision a Docker environment for you in Azure, and provide self-paced learning guides. The hands-on labs will cover:
Docker on Windows 101. Get started with Docker on Windows, and learn why the world is moving to containers. You’ll start by exploring the Windows Docker images from Microsoft, then you’ll run some simple applications, and learn how to scale apps across multiple servers running Docker in swarm mode
Modernize .NET Apps &8211; for Ops. An admin guide to migrating .NET apps to Docker images, showing how the build, ship, run workflow makes application maintenance fast and risk-free. You’ll start by migrating a sample app to  Docker, and then learn how to upgrade the application, patch the Windows version the app uses, and patch the Windows version on the host &8211; all with zero downtime.
Modernize .NET Apps &8211; for Devs. A developer guide to app migration, showing how the Docker platform lets you update a monolithic application without doing a full rebuild. You’ll start with a sample app and see how to break components out into separate units, plumbing the units together with the Docker platform and the tried-and-trusted applications available on Docker Hub.

Announcing DockerCon 2017

The Docker Team is excited to announce the next DockerCon will be in held in Austin, Texas from April 17-20. For anyone not in an event planning role, finding a venue is always an adventure. Finding a venue for a unique event such as DockerCon adds an extra layer of complexity. After inquiring on over 15 venues and visiting 3 cities, we are confident that we have chosen a great venue for DockerCon 2017 and the Docker community.
DockerCon US 2017: Austin
April 17-20, 2017
Between the lively tech community, amazing restaurants and culture, Austin will be a natural fit for DockerCon. A diverse range of companies such as Dell, Whole Foods Market, Rackspace, HomeAway and many more of the hottest IT startups call Austin home. We can’t wait to welcome back many returning DockerCon alumni as well as open the DockerCon doors to so many new attendees and companies in the Austin area.
One of the most exciting additions to the DockerCon program is an extra day of content! We reviewed every attendee survey from Seattle in June, debriefed with Docker Captains and others in the community and came to the overwhelming conclusion that two days was not enough time to get the most value out of the jampacked DockerCon agenda. In 2017, we will introduce a third day of content that will repeat the top voted sessions, give more time to complete Hands-on Labs and allow more time for other learning opportunities that are in the works.
Let’s get this party started!
Save the dates:

Monday April 17: Paid training, afternoon workshops and evening welcome reception
Tuesday April 18: DockerCon Day 1, After Party
Wednesday April 19: DockerCon Day 2
Thursday April 20: DockerCon Day 3 &; half day of repeat top sessions, Hands-on Labs and workshops

So, by now you’ve read this entire blog post and are now shouting, “What about DockerCon Europe?!” The truth is that we have spent many months searching for an available venue and we were unable to secure a site for this year. The reality is that the conference industry is incredibly competitive and we need to lock in venues farther in advance. For this reason we are now working on bringing DockerCon back to Europe in 2017. We will update the community as soon as we concrete details.

About DockerCon
DockerCon 2017 is a three day, Docker-centric conference organized by Docker. This year’s US edition will take place in Austin, TX and continue to build on the success of previous events as it grows and reflects Docker’s established ecosystem and ever growing community. DockerCon will feature topics and content covering all aspects of Docker and will be suitable for Developers, DevOps, Ops, System Administrators and C-level executives. You will have ample opportunities to connect and learn about how others are using Docker. We&;re confident that no matter your level of expertise with Docker or your company size, you&8217;ll meet and learn from other attendees who share the same use cases and overcame the same challenges using Docker.

Save the date for @DockerCon 2017 in Austin April 17-20 ! we hope to see you all at To Tweet
