#Docker Captain is a distinction that Docker awards select members of the community that are both experts in their field and are passionate about sharing their Docker knowledge with others.

This week we are highlighting 3 of our outstanding Captains who are making September one filled with Docker learnings and events. Read on to learn more about how they got started, what they love most about Docker, and why Docker.
Alex Ellis
Alex is a Principal Application Developer with expertise in the full Microsoft .NET stack, Node.js and Ruby. He enjoys making robots and IoT-connected projects with Linux and the Raspberry PI microcomputer. He is a writer for Linux User and Developer magazine and also produces tutorials on Docker, coding and IoT for his tech blog at alexellis.io.

As a Docker Captain, how do you share that learning with the community?
I started out by sharing tutorials and code on my blog alexellis.io and on Github. More recently I’ve attended local meet-up groups, conferences and tech events to speak and tell a story about Docker and cool hacks. I joined Twitter in March and it’s definitely a must-have for reaching people.
Why do you like Docker?
Docker makes the complex seem simple and forces you to automate your workflow. I have a background in software engineering and automation is everything for delivering reliable, repeatable and testable systems.
What’s a common tech question you’re asked and the high-level explanation?
The questions vary and often surprise me – I like to be able to connect people to the right Captains or Docker folks. Opening an issue about a technical problem on Github is really valuable for the community and the Docker project. Please give feedback.
What’s your favorite thing about the Docker community?
The community is vibrant and full of life &8211; people are working on solutions for problems that you may have and are generous with their knowledge.
Who are you when you’re not online?
I love film photography &8211; everything from buying vintage cameras, to developing and printing my own images. I balance my time at the screen with road cycling &8211; cruising down country lanes in the countryside or spending just time away from the screen in the great outdoors.
Marcos Lilljedahl
Marcos Lilljedahl is an OS evangelist and Golang lover with a strong background in distributed systems and app architecture. Marcos is currently working at Matica, a Machine Learning startup that brings latest in research to industry. Mantica runs Machine learning apps in a fully dockerized environment mainly using compose / machine and engine.

How has Docker impacted what you do on a daily basis?
Although I run pretty much everything in containers (even games like Counter Strike / Quake3 / etc), the biggest benefit comes from the fact that it really has helped to reduce friction when working with different teams and platforms. It’s a fundamental tool for everyone to speak the same “app” language and then translate that directly into production.
As a Docker Captain, how do you share that learning with the community?
I’m not the “blog post” kind of person, I usually like to deep dive into code and understand the core principles about Docker. I usually contribute by helping people resolve GitHub issues or by responding on the Slack community channel when there are specific questions or unexpected issues. Also, whenever I find some time, I like to hack on stuff like our two hackathon winner projects CMT and Whaleprint.
Why do you like Docker?
What I like the most is its fundamental purpose (help people with great ideas to make things possible) and the community behind it.
Who are you when you’re not online?
I like to do all kind of sports like sailing, swimming, playing soccer, running, snowboarding, roller hockey and crossfit. I also enjoy spending weekends with my girlfriend and family cooking asado.
If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and why?
I would have loved to meet young Steve Jobs. I believe he transmitted the energy to make anyone do the impossible.
Sreenivas Makam
Sreenivas Makam is currently working as a senior engineering manager at Cisco Systems, Bangalore. His interests include SDN, NFV, Network Automation, DevOps, and cloud technologies, and he likes to try out and follow open source projects in these areas. His blog can be found at sreeninet.wordpress.com and his hacky code at github.com/smakam. Sreenivas wrote a book on Mastering CoreOS, which was published in February 2016. He has done the technical reviewing for Mastering Ansible book, Packt Publishing, Ansible Networking Report, O’Reilly Publisher and Network programmability and Automation book, O&8217;Reilly Publisher. He has given presentations at Docker and other meetups in Bangalore.

How has Docker impacted what you do on a daily basis?
I come from a networking background and used to approach problems from an infrastructure point of view. Docker has given me the insight to approach problems from a developer or an operator perspective.
As a Docker Captain, how do you share that learning with the community?
I enjoy sharing my learning and knowledge through my blogs. Other than this, I give presentations in Docker meetups and other meetups in Bangalore. The best part about being a Docker captain is the direct access to Docker developers and other Docker captains and there is always something new to learn from them.
How did you first get involved with Docker?
I was fascinated with cloud adoption and trying out related technologies like AWS and Google cloud, Openstack and SDN. I dabbled into Docker as part of this. I was initially impressed with how fast I could build, deploy and destroy a Docker container. I got involved in Docker from October 2014 and the first version I used was Docker 1.3.
Why do you like Docker?
There are many reasons, the biggest reason is perhaps the simplicity. There has been a lot of effort put in making complex topics like Orchestration and Security very easy to use for both developers and operations teams.
What’s your favorite thing about the Docker community?
The Docker community is super-active, encourages new members and supports diversity.

Security through Community: Introducing the Vendor Security Alliance

Today #Docker is proud to announce that we are founding member of the Vendor Security Alliance (#VSA), a coalition formed to help organizations streamline their vendor evaluation processes by establishing a standardized questionnaire for appraising a vendor’s security and compliance practices.The VSA was established to solve a fundamental problem: how can IT teams conform to its existing security practices when procuring and deploying third-party components and platforms?
The VSA solves this problem by developing a required set of security questions that will allow vendors to demonstrate to their prospective customers that they are doing a good job with security and data handling. Good security is built on great technology paired with processes and policies. Until today, there was no consistent way to discern if all these things were in place. Doing a proper security evaluation today tends to be a hard, manual process. A large number of key questions come to mind when gauging how well a third-party company manages security.
As an example, these are the types of things that IT teams must be aware of when assessing a vendor’s security posture:

Do they securely handle sensitive customer data?
Do they have the ability to detect when attacks occur on their infrastructure?
Do they train their developers on secure coding best practices?
Do they follow industry best practices for configuring the systems?

Docker joins the Vendor Security Alliance’s founding team of security conscious companies including Uber, Dropbox, Palantir, Twitter, Square, Atlassian, Godaddy and Airbnb. The founding team has worked together to provide a pragmatic and approachable questionnaire. The collective team draws from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, including mobile, enterprise, and infrastructure companies which have provided a unique set of perspectives that has informed a strong common security lexicon. We expect this questionnaire to be the basis for all companies to understand their security posture with tangible, actionable questions that will help improve software security across all industries. In service of that goal, we are releasing the questionnaire so that it is freely available to everyone. At the beginning of October, a copy of the questionnaire will be available for everyone at https://www.vendorsecurityalliance.org/.
As a founding member of the Vendor Security Alliance, Docker has taken an important step towards helping companies secure their processes and infrastructure. At Docker we talk a lot about helping organizations build secure infrastructure using Docker’s tools like Docker Content Trust and the Docker Engine’s runtime isolation, both of which were influenced by diligent feedback from our customers. But technology isn’t the whole equation. Assessing yourself against best practices and understanding how well your vendors manage their programs is an important step when it comes to building a security program at any company. Docker will also be using this questionnaire to assess our own vendors, while looking outward to see how it will help the industry with shared practices and consistent evaluation criteria.

The 4 Biggest Questions About Docker from VMworld 2016

Simply incredible. We spent last week at #VMworld speaking with thousands of enterprise security, infrastructure and virtualization pros. It was humbling to witness all of the curiosity and excitement around #Docker at the show, and how Docker clearly made a strong impression on the attendees.

This curiosity around Docker and its use within enterprise environments is the reason why i’m writing this blog. We noticed that there were many of the same questions that arose, and we figured we should share them with you, as you start your journey towards adopting Docker containers and VMs.
Here are the most commonly asked questions from the conference.

What is Docker? Or even a container? Is it a lightweight VM? Can I use it with vSphere? What value do they provide?

A Docker container is a standard unit in which application code, binaries and libraries can be packaged and isolated. The Docker Engine is the runtime installed on your infrastructure of choice and is what executes commands to build and deploy containers. Many containers can be connected together to form a single application or one container can include the entire codebase. Docker provides an abstraction layer between the application itself and the underlying compute infrastructure making the application completely portable to any other endpoint running Docker.
Docker containers are not VMs nor even lightweight VMs as their architecture is different.The image below displays the key differences between Docker containers and VMs . Docker containers share the OS kernel on the host where each VM has a full copy of an OS inside the VM.

This does not mean these two models are mutually exclusive. Docker containers run anywhere a Docker Engine is installed…and Docker Engine runs on bare metal, in VMs (vSphere, Hyper-V) and clouds (AWS, Google, Azure, and more). This also means that Docker containers are portable from any one of the above environments to the other without having to recode the application. Additionally many users add containers into an existing virtual infrastructure to increase the density of workloads possible per VM.

There are several reasons why Docker containers are being adopted within the enterprise:

Security – Docker containers are completely isolated from one another, even when running on the same host and sharing the same OS. This makes them ideal for enterprise teams leveraging (for example) bare metal servers and are looking to comply with industry security regulations. And with the Docker Datacenter platform enterprise teams receive on-premises tools chock full of security features.
Portability across infrastructure and app environments &8211; Docker containers can run anywhere the Docker Engine is installed. This gives teams the ability to move their applications across different environment without having to tweak the code. For example, teams can easily move from vSphere to other environments like Azure and AWS #cloud.
Optimize Resources &8211; Docker containers can be deployed within VMs, and in fact vSphere is a great place to run them. This allows teams to run multiple containers within VMs. This reduces the overall VM footprint and decreases maintenance costs associated with maintaining legacy apps. Given that there are now less VMs, companies can spend less on vSphere including reduced hypervisor licensing costs as well.

Speed &8211; Docker containers help streamline the application lifecycle, helping developers build applications more quickly and IT ops teams react faster to changing business needs. Containers spin up on average in ⅜ of a second, compared to VMs which take several seconds or minutes. This sub second spin up time of Docker containers allow teams to onboard developers more quickly and deploy out to production more frequently.

Today Docker Engine runs on all major Linux distros like: Ubuntu, CentOS, RHEL, OpenSUSE and more. Support for Windows Server is the most popular question as most companies have a mix of Windows and Linux based applications. I’m pleased to say that very soon, Docker Engine will run on Windows Server 2016. This means that the same Docker container technology and workflow can be applied to Linux and Windows Server workloads. For example, going forward, admins can have applications that have a back-end windows piece e.g. Microsoft SQL server and leverage a linux-based web front end, and have be part of the same app… running in vSphere VMs, baremetal or cloud (boom)!
