Driving cultural and cloud innovation in Italy: New IBM Garage launches in Milan

We designed the IBM Garage in response to this new business environment. It’s our goal to help organizations drive transformational change at the speed of a startup and the scale of an enterprise. We achieve this by providing expert consultancy, training and a platform for co-creation. Getting full value from technologies like cloud, AI and the internet of things (IoT) requires new ways of working and a shift in organizational culture. For many businesses, this requires the support of a true cloud partner, not just a vendor.
The IBM Garage philosophy also incorporates Enterprise Design Thinking, an approach focused on user-centered experiences and outcomes, a culture of reinvention and the belief that diverse, empowered teams are critical for innovation. Further, with business agility increasingly important, it borrows practices from the startup world, such as co-collaboration and multi-disciplinary teams, that have helped it disrupt larger competitors.
Italy’s economy is primed to benefit from just this kind of support. The digital market alone is currently experiencing year-on-year growth — 2.3 percent in 2017, 2.6 percent in 2018 and 2.8 percent projected for 2019. At the same time, disruption is driving firms to look for the new opportunities that digital platforms deliver. Italian adoption of IoT, for example, was up 18.9 percent in 2018. With investment in the country’s startups at an all-time high, there is no shortage of innovative companies with money to spend and ambition to match.
Seeing the impact of innovation
By bringing together diverse teams of experts to quickly create, test and scale innovative new ideas, the IBM Garage model has established a formidable track record in the European market. In London, we have helped UK-based global supplier of electronics components and tools RS Components to boost innovation and accelerate development. In one instance, we supported the company as it implemented pair programming processes to rapidly deliver a new peer-to-peer marketplace platform in just four weeks
Similarly, our IBM Garage colleagues in Munich worked with INTER, a German insurance group, to improve the experience for customers interested in dental insurance. This involved running a series of workshops that led to development of an AI-enabled chatbot able to answer questions and process new policy applications. Following roll-out, INTER’s dental insurance sales rose by 33 percent.
The multidisciplinary approach we use in IBM Garage means it is even possible to revolutionize industries as old as agriculture. By bringing together a group comprised of designers, architects, developers and data scientists, TopCon, a Japanese group working in the field of optical instruments, IT construction and IT agriculture wants to make AI an integral part of agricultural process. Using IBM Watson, the organization is now tackling previously unexplored problems, aiming to maximize crop productivity while minimizing use of resources like water and fertilizers. This promises greater sustainability, crop quality and complete traceability of food, from the field to table.
Launching IBM Garage Milan
IBM Garage Milan is based on the same principles as other locations in the wider network. Located in a brand-new IBM Studios, our clients will have unprecedented access to the full spectrum of IBM services and support, including the Strategy and Design Lab and the IBM Client Center.
Even before the official launch, Italian companies are seeing results of co-creating with the IBM Garage. Elica, a major kitchen appliances supplier, has already conducted a number of workshops and collaboration sessions. With the initial planning phase of the project successfully completed, Elica in 10 weeks designed and developed an air quality controller system, which is integrated with Elica’s devices and is based on its own exclusive algorithm Air Q System, built on IBM Cloud with Watson Services.
At its heart, IBM Garage is a cultural movement. It is about people, the way they communicate and collaborate, and how organizations can support new ways of working. Emerging technologies are changing the way we do business. But cloud, AI and automation will only deliver on their promise if organizational processes and culture change too. In the next chapter of digital transformation, the ability to drive innovation at scale will be the difference between success and failure – and this requires a fundamental shift in how companies operate.

IBM and Cisco: Collaborating to bring hybrid cloud to today’s modern enterprise

We hear from enterprises today that they want an open, faster, more reliable way to modernize and move to the cloud in order to transform their IT and gain real business benefits such as agility, faster market responsiveness and more rapid innovation.
To do this, they need to be able to quickly build, test and deploy applications in a modern, microservices-based architecture across on-premises and public cloud environments.
As enterprises adopt this model, Kubernetes is a choice for orchestration, and we have seen that many enterprises use Kubernetes to enable applications that are both VM-based and containerized, running on public cloud, private cloud and on premises. Configuring and managing Kubernetes across these hybrid cloud environments can be complicated, however. It often requires both manual effort and multiple tools. In addition, organizations want to be able to use the same tools to manage and support the lifecycle of existing applications.
IBM and Cisco join forces
IBM and Cisco are expanding our work together to deliver a common and secured Kubernetes experience across on-premises and public cloud environments that is designed to help customers simplify the development, deployment and management of applications.
As part of our expanded collaboration, we are announcing support for IBM Cloud Private on Cisco HyperFlex and HyperFlex Edge hyperconverged infrastructure. This includes enabling the new IBM Cloud Pak for Applications to support Cisco’s HyperFlex hyperconverged infrastructure. IBM Cloud Paks are designed to deliver enterprise-ready containerized software solutions to give you an open, faster, more secured way to move your core business applications to the cloud. In addition, IBM is adding support for Cisco ACI Software Defined Networking and Cisco AppDynamics Application Performance Monitoring tool with IBM Cloud Private. We are also announcing the availability of Cisco ACI vPOD running on IBM Cloud bare metal servers.
Additionally, we are announcing the availability of Cisco ACI Virtual Pod (vPOD) running on IBM Cloud bare metal servers designed to extend the multipod architecture into our virtual infrastructure. vPOD consists of virtual spines and leafs and supports up to eight instances of ACI Virtual Edge. These elements are often deployed on VMware services on the IBM Cloud to support hybrid deployments from on-premises environments to the IBM Cloud. With IBM Cloud, enterprises can also utilize extensive IBM global cloud data center footprint and high value services, including the IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service and capabilities ranging from analytics and AI to blockchain and IoT.
More broadly, IBM and Cisco are working together on a hybrid cloud architecture that builds upon expertise from both companies:

IBM delivers hybrid cloud solutions that include open source components, such as Kubernetes, Open Whisk, KNative, Istio, Cloud Foundry and Prometheus, as well as an extensive catalog of IBM enterprise software and open source software. IBM has multi-zone public cloud regions deployed across the world with services from infrastructure including bare metal, virtual and container services, to developer and data services.
Cisco brings enterprise-class data center, networking and analytics.

The new hybrid cloud architecture is engineered to reduce the complexity of running Kubernetes across on-premises and public cloud environments. With IBM Multicloud Manager, enterprises can have a single place to manage multiple clusters running across multiple on-premises, public and private cloud environments, providing consistent visibility, governance and automation from on-premises to the edge. With its multicluster approach to application deployment—both cloud-native and modernized—workloads can be automatically deployed across clusters with governance and manageability.
Modernize with hybrid cloud
Through our expanded collaboration, IBM and Cisco are helping enterprises modernize applications with consistency across hybrid cloud environments, whether bare metal, VMs or containers. Together, we are collaborating to help enterprises reduce the inconsistencies and potential risks between on-premises environments and the public cloud when deploying containerized infrastructure to modernize and manage applications.

What’s new in automation software deployment?

Digital business automation software can help companies scale operations, improve customer experiences and control costs. Most business and IT leaders have moved on from understanding the business value of automation to how best to implement it. Part of implementation success is choosing the right deployment environment. The following three options fit different business needs:

On premises. Some firms and government agencies keep all of their data on site, either because their mission requires it or because they have yet to migrate to cloud-based data.
Hybrid cloud. By using containers, firms can run software in their own cloud or contract with a vendor for cloud hosting across several private or public clouds.
SaaS. Data centers provide cloud hosting of data in a secure environment, with all infrastructure managed by the vendor.

Whether you choose one or any combination of the three, look for flexibility and common automation software, tools and capabilities that work across all hosting environments.
What’s new: Deploying on the cloud of your choice
IBM recently introduced a new hybrid cloud deployment option for its digital business automation platform called IBM Cloud Pak for Automation. This deployment of the digital business automation platform is designed to overcome the challenges that hybrid cloud environments present by delivering several key benefits:

Run on the cloud of your choice. Businesses have the freedom to manage digital business automation solutions consistently within the Kubernetes environment of their choice.
Ensure consistency in virtualization. Enterprises can manage containers and virtual machines consistently in a single operating environment.
Use a common deployment interface. Companies can deploy one or more automation capabilities simultaneously using a single tool.
Gain operational insights. Wherever the platform automates work to increase efficiency, it also aggregates large amounts of data. There’s great business growth potential in that data, but how can businesses make sense of it? The IBM Cloud Pak includes a capability that provides an analytical window into company data by capturing data across the platform. For example, a large bank in South America needed better visibility and insights into its data to further improve operations. By using the analytics capability within the platform, the bank can gain visibility into their operations across various teams. The bank’s data scientists are now in the process of applying machine learning to the operational data in combination with other business data to gather additional insights into business operations.

Leading-edge automation uses a platform so users can automate most types of work at scale and get the greatest deployment and purchasing flexibility.
