In addition to open source breakout sessions during the conference agenda, there will be an Open Source Summit on Thursday dedicated to collaboration and innovation with contributors, maintainers and users of popular Docker and container projects. If you’ve never contributed to open source, join Phil Estes from IBM, a containerd maintainer and OCI Technical Oversight Board member, to learn how to enter the open source world and start contributing in his session: Giving Back to Upstream: An Open Source Beginner’s Primer.
In Establishing an Open Source Program Office, Tim Tyler from Metlife and Lee Calcote from Solarwinds will share the how, why, and when of setting up a formal open source program and what to measure to make OSS successful within an organization–big or small.
There will be additional breakout sessions on Cloud Native Application Bundle (CNAB), building and deploying a secrets plugin on Docker Swarm, Firecracker-containerd, writing maintainable integration tests with Docker, Rootless containers, and more.

Open Source Summit
The Open Source Summit brings together project maintainers, contributors and users to share project updates and engage in discussions at birds-of-a-feather roundtables following the presentations. Opportunities to engage in the container-native projects driving our industry include:

Security
The security session will cover three key areas in container security: supply chain of how code gets into containers, authorization and control of what is allowed to run where, and runtime security such as stopping container escapes. The session will be presented by open source contributors from Docker, Styra, NYU, and Netflix.
Kubernetes
Kubernetes is an open-source system for automating deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications. This session will focus on updates from Google and Docker about roadmaps for Container Storage Interface (CSI), Container Network Interface (CNI) and support for Windows workloads graduating to stable in Kubernetes 1.14. We will also see a demo of building stateful applications using Rook on Kubernetes.
containerd
Join containerd maintainers as they go through the design and architecture of containerd and learn how to get started as a user or integrator of containerd. This session will go through how containerd manages images, runs containers, operates on Windows, and how containerd can be used with Kubernetes through the Container Runtime Interface (CRI). Additionally, see how Docker’s architecture is evolving to fully integrate with containerd as well as how Google Cloud and IBM are leveraging containerd in their platforms.
Compose + Docker App
Compose is a tool for defining and running multi-container Docker applications. It is great for development, testing, and staging environments, as well as CI workflows. Learn about the latest updates of Docker Compose from the Docker Team and how to take your containers to the next level by making your Docker Compose applications reusable and shareable on Docker Hub with Docker App.
CNAB
Cloud Native Application Bundle (CNAB) is an open source, cloud-agnostic specification for packaging and running distributed applications that aims to solve the complications of building modern heterogeneous apps. In this discussion Docker, Microsoft, and Intel will share where the CNAB spec is today and visions for the future. Become a part of the conversation with maintainers and fellow CNAB users.
BuildKit
BuildKit is a modern builder toolkit powering the next generation of docker build with many new capabilities to boost your developer and CI workflow. Maintainers and BuildKit experts from Docker, Google, and NTT Corporation will present new features and useful patterns for getting the most out of BuildKit, advanced features around defining your own front-ends, and using a rootless BuildKit in Kubernetes.
Service Mesh
This session will focus on performance testing results of 10 popular service mesh projects using an open source service mesh benchmark tool. We will provide a common baseline across service mesh control planes, like Istio, and modern proxy data planes, like Envoy. In addition to performance, we’ll take an in-depth look at the landscape of service mesh, characterize and contrast their functionality as well as their architectures.
SwarmKit
SwarmKit is a toolkit for orchestrating distributed systems at any scale. It includes primitives for node discovery, raft-based consensus, task scheduling and more. In this session, we will focus on recent improvements and upcoming features requested–specifically, server side stacks, cron job support, and Container Storage Interface (CSI) support for SwarmKit.
Serverless
This session will discuss serverless and container workloads and the use case for each. Popular open source serverless projects will be shown running on Docker. Panelists from each project will have a presentation and demo, followed by a discussion on the best use cases for serverless.

I’m talking about service meshes – Linkerd and Istio in particular. It’s a technical session so there are lots of demos, but it’s grounded in the practical question – do you really need a service mesh, and is it worth the cost? You’ll learn what a service mesh can do, and how it helps to cut a lot of infrastructure concerns from your code.
What are you most excited about at DockerCon?
I can’t tell you, it’s a secret… But I’m involved in one of our big announcements and it’s going to be a real “this changes everything” moment.
What is your all time favorite DockerCon moment?
In Barcelona I presented one of the keynote demos with my Docker buddy Lee. We were on the big stage for about 7 minutes, and rehearsing for that took all weekend. Lots of work but great fun and we had a ton of positive feedback.

Our session is about how we do service discovery, load balancing, and rate limiting for high-traffic public-facing services like Docker Hub. At Docker we have developed a solution that allows routing web traffic across different workloads and environments . It doesn’t matter if the application is natively running on Ubuntu, via “docker container run”, in Docker Swarm, or in Kubernetes–our solution will get traffic to your service efficiently and even handle containers coming and going!
Why should people go to your session?
Our routing layer is the single most important piece of our infrastructure at Docker and moving that layer from host-based, native applications to Kubernetes was no small feat. Your routing layer shouldn’t slow developers down–see how we give our internal customers even more choice and flexibility!
What’s your favorite DockerCon moment?
Brett I: My favorite moment was meeting a large group of devops people in a Hallway Track and realizing we were all solving the same problems individually, how inefficient that was, and how powerful community and open source can be.
What are you most excited about for DCSF 19?
Alex: Meeting people and learning about how they operationalize Docker.

After each conference, our team goes through all of your feedback and brainstorms adjustments big and small to make sure DockerCon remains a special experience for you. To everyone that filled out the event survey – thank you! We know it can seem tedious but we appreciate the feedback.
With that in mind, we wanted to share some of the new changes you’ll see in San Francisco:

Role-based Content: This year you can find dedicated tracks on how to use Docker for Developers and for IT Infrastructure & Operations teams. These tracks are led by Docker Captains, customers and Docker Solution Architects sharing their experiences and best practices in building and running apps in containers. And, to make the experience even better – we heard you – and have a new mobile app for attendees.
One Global DockerCon: The community has grown all around the world. To help reach more people with container education, starting with DockerCon San Francisco 2019, we are adjusting our events calendar to feature one DockerCon conference a year and a series of one-day summit events around the world.
No Registration Required: First Come, First Serve Talks: At the heart of experimentation is to try new things and adjust as we learn. Breakout sessions are returning to a first come, first served basis – you don’t need to register to attend. However, you can still add them to your schedule in the agenda builder.
Opportunities to Engage with Open Source: We are excited to spend time in our open source roots. This year, DockerCon features a dedicated track and Open Source Summit to provide a forum to learn about the latest innovation and the container native projects driving our industry. There will be group discussions and opportunities to collaborate with contributors and maintainers and exchange ideas with one another.
Empower Communities: Last year we held our first ever Women’s event featuring a panel discussion and happy hour. After receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback, we have expanded to a half day Women@DockerCon Summit with multiple panels, a workshop and a small registration fee to donate to Black Girls Code.

Advancing Windows Containers with Docker and Kubernetes

Today, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) announced Kubernetes 1.14,  which includes support for Windows nodes. Kubernetes supporting Windows is a monumental step for the industry and it further confirms the work Docker has been doing with Microsoft to develop Windows containers over the past five years. It is evidence that containers are not just for Linux; Windows and .NET applications represent an important and sizeable footprint of applications that can benefit from both the Docker platform and Kubernetes.

Docker’s collaboration with Microsoft started five years ago. Today, every version of Windows Server 2016 and later ships with the Docker Engine – Enterprise. In addition, to facilitate a great user experience with Windows containers, Microsoft publishes more than 129 Windows container images of its popular software on Docker Hub. Many Docker Enterprise customers are already running mixed Windows and Linux containers with Swarm, and an upcoming release of Docker Enterprise will allow our customers to expand their Windows options to Kubernetes as well. Today both Docker Enterprise and Docker Desktop users have found that the easiest way to use and manage Kubernetes is with Docker and now these users will have the same benefits with Windows containers as well.
gMSA Support in Kubernetes for Active Directory-Authenticated Applications
In the time since that first Windows Server release, we’ve been working closely with customers to understand how to make containerized Windows applications enterprise-ready for  production. Our five years of experience shows us that runtime support for Windows-based containers is only one component of what enterprises require to make Windows containers with Kubernetes operational in their environment.
An additional requirement is support for configuring containerized workloads with domain credentials and identity in an Active Directory environment. Initially we worked with Microsoft to plumb in gMSA credential support for individual containers running on Docker Engine in Windows. Next, we implemented orchestrator-wide support for gMSA credentials in Swarm. Using our experience so far, we are leading the design and implementation of gMSA support for Windows workloads in Kubernetes, delivering Alpha level support for gMSA support in Kubernetes 1.14.
Many Windows-based applications are run on domain joined hosts and use Service Accounts managed by Active Directory to access other resources and services in the domain. Windows containers, however, are not full-fledged domain joined objects. Instead, Windows containers can run with a special type of service account introduced in Windows Server 2012 called group managed service accounts (gMSA). Windows uses credentials associated with a gMSA (in lieu of individual computer accounts) to enable containerized Windows applications to access other services in an Active Directory domain.
Docker, in collaboration with Microsoft and the Kubernetes community, is working to add support for gMSA in Kubernetes. This encompasses: (1) custom resources to configure credential specs for gMSAs in a cluster wide fashion, (2) authorizing and resolving references to the gMSA credential specs from pod specifications and (3) passing down the full gMSA credential spec JSON to the container runtime (like Docker engine). This feature is in alpha with Kubernetes 1.14 and you can find more about its design and implementation here. We invite you to test this out and contribute to the effort which will help to further expand the types of applications that can be run in containers and will continue to work with the community on ensuring this reaches general availability.  
Kubernetes and Windows: What’s Next
Windows admins and users also need overlay networking and dynamically provisioned storage to become enterprise-ready, and we are also working with the Kubernetes community in these areas and will have more to discuss and demonstrate at DockerCon 2019 in San Francisco. We look forward to sharing some of the progress here and hope to see you there!

Docker Pals Program 2019

At DockerCon Copenhagen we launched the Docker Pals program in order to connect attendees and help them make the most out of their trip. Attending a conference for the first time or by yourself can be intimidating and we don’t want anyone to feel that way at DockerCon! Pals get matched with a few others who are new (the “Pals”), and someone who knows their way around (the “Guide”) so you will have a familiar group before you arrive at the conference. Guides help Pals figure out which talks and activities to attend, and are available for questions.

Happy Pi Day with Docker and Raspberry Pi

What better way to say “Happy Pi Day” than by installing Docker Engine – Community (CE) 18.09 on Raspberry Pi. This article will walk you through the process of installing Docker Engine 18.09 on a Raspberry Pi. There are many articles out there that show this process, but many failed due to older Engine versions and some syntax issues.
Special thanks to Docker Solutions Engineer, Stefan Scherer and his monitoring image (stefanscherer/monitor) along with the whoami image (stefanscherer/whoami) that allows Pimoroni Blinkt! LED’s to turn on/off when scaling an application within a Swarm Cluster.
Instructions
For this demo, I used 7 Raspberry Pi’s 3 (model B+) and 1 Pimoroni Blinkt! LED for each Pi.
1. Download the following Raspian image ‘2018-11-13-raspbian-stretch-full.img’ from https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/
2. Use balenaEtcher to write the image to each of your microusb cards.
3. To make DNS hostname resolution a little easier, I setup local hostnames on each Pi device. Below is an example.

4. On each of your Pi’s, install the following:
   a. Install the following prerequisites.
sudo apt-get install apt-transport-https ca-certificates software-properties-common -y
    b. Download and install Docker.
curl -fsSL get.docker.com -o get-docker.sh && sh get-docker.sh
   c. Give the ‘pi’ user the ability to run Docker.
sudo usermod -aG docker pi
   d. Import Docker CPG key.
sudo curl https://download.docker.com/linux/raspbian/gpg
   e. Setup the Docker Repo.
vim /etc/apt/sources.list
         Add the following line and save:  
deb https://download.docker.com/linux/raspbian/ stretch stable
   f. Patch and update your Pi.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
   g. Start the Docker service.
systemctl start docker.service
   h. To verify that Docker is installed and running.
docker info
   i. You should now some information in regards to versioning, runtime,etc.
5. Now that Docker has been installed on all of your Pi’s, we can now setup Docker Swarm.
6. On one of your Pi devices that will be a master node, type the following:
docker swarm init
7. Once Docker initiates the swarm setup, you will be presented with a command to add additional worker nodes. Below is an example.
docker swarm join –token SWMTKN-1-<token-key> 192.168.93.231:2377
    a. on each worker node paste the text in step 7 
8. To add additional manager nodes, the token and string will be different than the worker string. In order to discover the correct string to add manager nodes, do the following command on an existing working manager node.
docker swarm join-token manager
    a. copy and paste the output to each of your manager nodes
9. If you want to add additional worker nodes and don’t have the correct syntax, just type the following on any of the working manager nodes to retrieve it.
docker swarm join-token worker
10. To have a graphical representation of your current cluster, we will install the VIZ application. For more information, go to https://github.com/dockersamples/docker-swarm-visualizer. To install, type the following:
docker swarm join-token worker
–name=viz
–publish=9090:8080/tcp
–constraint=node.role==manager
–mount=type=bind,src=/var/run/docker.sock,dst=/var/run/docker.sock
alexellis2/visualizer-arm:latest
11. Using a browser, connect to one of your master services on port 9090. You should now see the Visualizer showing your worker and manager nodes.
12. Now we will install the monitor app that will be deployed on both the manager and worker nodes. Type the following on the one of the manager nodes.
docker service create –name monitor –mode global
–restart-condition any –mount type=bind,src=/sys,dst=/sys
–mount type=bind,src=/var/run/docker.sock,dst=/var/run/docker.sock
stefanscherer/monitor:1.2.0
13. Once the monitor app is install, we will now install the ‘whoami’ app. The ‘whoami’ app is a small application that will trigger the LED’s on/off by scaling the application up and down. For each running instance, you will get one LED turned on. As we scale the application up to 5, you will have 5 LEDs turn on. As you scale up and down the number of LEDs that turn on will depend on how many containers you have running in your cluster. To install the application, type the following.
docker service create –name whoami stefanscherer/whoami:1.1.0
14. Once deployed, you should have 1 LED turned on.
15. Now lets scale the application to 5. Type the following.
docker service scale whoami=5
16. You should now have 5 LEDs on. Please that this will take some time as the Pi devices are not very fast and require some time to properly deploy and bring up.

containerd Graduates Within the CNCF

We are happy to announce that as of today, containerd, an industry-standard runtime for building container solutions, graduates within the CNCF. The successful graduation demonstrates containerd has achieved the maturity, stability and community acceptance required for broad ecosystem adoption. containerd has already been deployed in tens of millions of production systems today, making it the most widely adopted runtime and an essential upstream component of the Docker platform. containerd was donated to the CNCF as a top-level project because of its strong alignment with Kubernetes, gRPC and Prometheus and is the fifth project to make it to this tier. Built to address the needs of modern container platforms like Docker Enterprise and orchestration systems like Kubernetes, containerd ensures users have a consistent dev to ops experience.
From Docker’s initial announcement that it was spinning out its core runtime to its donation to the CNCF in March 2017, the containerd project has experienced significant growth and progress over the last two years. The primary goal of Docker’s donation was to foster further innovation in the container ecosystem by providing a core container runtime that could be leveraged by container system vendors and orchestration projects such as Kubernetes, Swarm, etc. An important design principle for containerd was to have first-class support for Kubernetes without being exclusively tethered to it, opening the door for many use cases for containers such as developer desktop, CI/CD, single node deployments, edge and IoT.
For Docker, containerd is the runtime component of Docker Engine, which makes it available to mainstream developers without having to change their workflow; whether they use it from a laptop in Docker Desktop, a production Kubernetes cluster in Docker Enterprise, a mainframe where traditional applications are modernized with containers, or edge IoT devices for IoT scenarios. Regardless of which system they are using, developers and operators benefit from the application workflow portability that Docker Engine provides, enabling them to build and run containers using the same trusted codebase everywhere.
Community Contribution
Within both the Docker and Kubernetes communities, there has been a significant increase in contributions from independents and CNCF member companies including Docker, Google, Alibaba, NTT, IBM, Microsoft, AWS and ZTE. containerd’s focus on clean design and quality has attracted new contributions while the CNCF has provided a neutral home to instill confidence that contributions are accepted based on merit. The project has welcomed four new maintainers and eight reviewers since joining CNCF, allowing the project to scale as contributions have increased without compromising on quality or review time.
Evolution of containerd
The contributors and maintainers have been working to add key functionality to containerd since the initial donation, which provided users a seamless container experience including transferring container images, container execution and supervision. containerd 1.0 was released less than a year later providing users with a supported low level API along with cross-platform support, reliable resource management and an easy-to-use client interface. This was followed by containerd 1.1 which brought support for Kubernetes’ CRI built into containerd. As the user base expanded and the community grew, demand for a wider range of runtimes led to containerd stabilizing the low level runtime API in containerd 1.2, enabling support for VM runtimes like Kata, Firecracker, and Hyper-V. The upcoming 1.3 release will bring a supported Windows runtime.
Looking into the future, we anticipate even wider adoption as the core container runtime for any architecture and infrastructure. Follow the project and get involved.
