Updated AWS Deep Learning AMIs with Apache MXNet 0.10 and TensorFlow 1.1 now available

You can now use Apache MXNet v0.10 and TensorFlow v1.1 with the AWS Deep Learning AMIs for Amazon Linux and Ubuntu.  Apache MXNet announced version 0.10, available at http://mxnet.io, with significant improvements to documentation and tutorials including updated installation guides for running MXNet on various operating systems and environments, such as NVIDIA’s Jetson TX2. In addition, current tutorials have been augmented with definitions for basic concepts around foundational development components. API documentation is now more comprehensive, with accompanying samples. Python PIP install packages are now available for the v0.10 release, making it easy to install MXNet on Mac OSX or Linux CPU or GPU environments. These packages also include Intel’s Math Kernel Library (MKL) support for acceleration of math routines on Intel CPUs.

AWS OpsWorks Stacks Adds Custom Tagging Support

AWS OpsWorks Stacks now supports custom tagging for AWS resources, improving the ability to organize your resources and report on AWS cost allocation. Previously, you had to manually add and maintain custom tags on all OpsWorks managed resources. Now you can leverage OpsWorks for tag management. After you apply tags to a stack or layer, OpsWorks propagates the tags down to Amazon EC2, Elastic Load Balancing, Amazon RDS, and Amazon Elastic Block Store resources. This makes it easy to break down costs on an environment, application, or software component level. You can apply tags through the OpsWorks console, the CLI, SDK, or API.

Updates to Apache Spark and in-transit encryption for Presto in Amazon EMR release 5.6.0

You can now use new versions of Apache Spark (2.1.1), Apache HBase (1.3.1), Apache Flink (1.2.1), and Apache Mahout (0.13.0) on Amazon EMR release 5.6.0. Each of these updated versions contains bug fixes and minor improvements. Also, Mahout 0.13.0 now supports Spark 2.x. Additionally, you can now enable in-transit data encryption using SSL/TLS for Presto when using an Amazon EMR security configuration.
