Here's Everything You Need To Know About The New iPhone 7/7 Plus

Apple announced its latest iPhones, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, on Wednesday. At first glance, the new smartphones don’t *look* all that different from iPhones past (not that it matters, because you’re going to cover it up with a case anyway) — but, as expected, they feature several major modifications that lurk under the hood.

In January, a report stated that the next iPhone was losing its headphone jack, and today’s announcement confirmed that news.

In January, a report stated that the next iPhone was losing its headphone jack, and today’s announcement confirmed that news.

Apple’s signature white headphones, called EarPods, are ditching the industry-wide 3.5 mm audio input standard. Instead, they’ll connect to the iPhone via Lightning cable, which means that you won’t be able to use the new EarPods with your computer or existing MP3 player, if that’s your thing (lol).

In an attempt to not alienate, um, everyone, Apple is including a Lightning-to-audio-jack adapter in-box for those who prefer regular wired headphones. All iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models will include EarPods with a Lightning connector and a Lightning-to-3.5-mm-headphone-jack adapter, also sold separately at Apple.com and Apple Stores, for $29 (US) and $9 (US), respectively.

But the hand that taketh away also giveth.

The new iPhones are finally water-resistant, following the lead of Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and potentially explosive Note7.

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus earned a rating of IP67, which means the devices can survive 30 minutes of submersion up to 1 meter deep. Toilet drops and short drunk swims (though not recommended) = OK. Scuba diving = not OK.

And now for the WTF-does-that-word-mean portion of today’s programming. TL;DR — the iPhone cameras are now faster and can capture images with a wider range of colors than previous models.

The front-facing FaceTime camera on both phones takes better selfies at 7 megapixels versus the 6s’s 5 megapixels. It has a new sensor capable of the aforementioned “wide color capture.” Both phones also now have optical image stabilization (instead of just the 7 Plus).

The rear camera on the iPhone 7 features a “six-element Apple-designed lens” (previous models were five-element), f/1.8 aperture, and a new 12-megapixel sensor that’s 60% faster and 30% more energy efficient. The upgraded “True Tone Flash” has four LEDs and provides 50% more light than the previous model, plus a flicker sensor that detects flickering overhead lights. Live Photos can now be edited and stabilized, too.

There’s a new powerful image signal processor in the 7 as well, also with “wide color capture.”

The processor, which can calculate 100 billion operations in 25 milliseconds, is up to “P3 cinema standards.” It can almost match the full gamut of color motion picture film. This is, apparently, a very Big Deal.

The larger of the iPhones, the 7 Plus, now has a two-camera system.

There is one 12-megapixel fixed wide-angle lens and one 12-megapixel telephoto lens, side by side. Images captured by each lens are combined into a single, optimized photo. The lenses have a “pure” 2x optical zoom and a 10x digital zoom, but are limited to 6x zoom for video recording. A new zoom button can be tapped for 2x optical zoom, and tap and drag for software zoom.

Later this year, you’ll be able to use the 7 Plus lenses simultaneously to keep the foreground in focus and blur the background for more depth — and preview the results. It’s essentially creating ~bokeh~, which gives backgrounds a gauzy, out-of-focus effect. The feature will arrive as an update.

In addition to the camera upgrades, there are a handful of hardware tweaks a casual observer might overlook. The home button is now force-sensitive and solid-state (it no longer physically moves when pressed). A Taptic Engine, the same one behind 3D Touch, notifications, and ringtones, will vibrate when you touch it. The display is 25% brighter, supports the 3D Touch technology that was introduced with the 6s last year, and, like the 9.7 iPad Pro, supports a wider color gamut. The battery life is slightly improved (two more hours for the 7 and one more hour for the 7 Plus versus the 6 and 6 Plus, respectively). There’s another external speaker at the top, too, which makes this iPhone twice as loud as previous versions and capable of playing audio in stereo mode.

There’s a new chip powering the iPhone, called the A10 Fusion. The A10 has four cores (up from two), and two of those cores are high-performance (40% faster than the A9 in the 6s). The remaining two cores are highly efficient and run at a fifth of the power of the high-performance cores. The graphics engine is also improved (50% faster than the previous A9 chip).

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus run on iOS 10, which includes a massive update to iMessage, new third-party capabilities for Siri, and an app for smart home devices called Home.

And, finally, the iPhones come in NEW COLORS (again, not that it matters, because you will/should use a case) in addition to gold, silver, and rose gold. “Black” has a matte “bead-blasted anodized” finish that gives off Batman Begins–era Batmobile vibes. “Jet black” has a high-gloss finish that makes the glass display look like it’s melting into the back of the phone.

These devices, unlocked, are about the same price as the iPhone 6S and 6s Plus.

But they now start with 32GB of internal storage instead of the previously garbage 16GB. The iPhone 7 starts at $649, and the iPhone 7 Plus starts at $769. Both phones come in 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB sizes, except in jet black, which isn’t available in 32GB. You’ll be able to preorder the new phones on Sept. 9. Both ship on Sept. 16.

Nintendo Stock Booms As Mario Comes To The iPhone

Yahoo Finance

The Nintendo stock market rollercoaster back, this time thanks to Apple.

Nintendo&;s U.S.-traded stock shot up over 23% Wednesday afternoon after Apple announced the company will release a version of its Super Mario franchise for the iPhone and iPad, and make a version of Pokémon Go. for the Apple Watch.

Investors have been clamoring for signs the company will get serious about mobile games, and Pokémon Go was the first sign of that — it&039;s been downloaded over 500 million times. Its early success pushed Nintendo stock to an all-time high, making the company more valuable than Sony, but the shares fell as investors realized Nintendo&039;s profits would not be boosted substantially by the game, which was developed by an independent studio.

Today&039;s stock price spike could also be short lived: Neither the Super Mario Run iOS game nor Pokémon Go for the watch are available yet, and Nintendo has yet to say how much money it expects to make from the games. Super Mario Run will be available by this holiday season and the watch version of Pokémon Go will be available by the end of the year.

The New Apple Watch Is All About Fitness

Priya Anand / BuzzFeed

When the Apple Watch was unveiled in March 2015, it was billed as the company&;s “most personal device ever”: a wearable that provided instant access to information and communication — from news and calendar alerts to phone calls and weather forecasts — as well as track your fitness.

A year and a half later, the Watch can still do a little bit of everything. But in a nod to the athletes who are becoming some of the Watch&039;s most fervent fans, Apple is doubling down on features that make it significantly more of a health and exercise tool.

During its keynote on Wednesday, Apple unveiled a slew of wellness-related updates to the second-generation Watch, known as Series 2. For the first time, it&039;ll be water-resistant up to 50 meters, not merely splash-proof — “so you can wear it whether you&039;re swimming or surfing or just doing the occasional cannonball,” Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams said, adding that 700 swimmers in Apple&039;s fitness lab had put the feature through the wringer. (Notably, it comes after a week after Fitbit announced its first swim-proof wearable.)

The Watch will also come with built-in GPS, so runners can go for a jog without their phones and still record a map of where and how far they&039;ve gone. And it&039;ll have its first-ever hiking app, ViewRanger, which downloads maps of places like Yosemite so you don&039;t need cell service to see where you&039;re going.

Priya Anand / BuzzFeed

There&039;s even a Pokémon Go angle. In the wake of this summer&039;s augmented-reality game craze, which got hundreds of millions of people trying to catch &039;em all (and walking a stunning 4.6 billion kilometers in the process, according to Nintendo), a version of the app is coming to the Watch. It&039;ll show trainers a daily summary of not just which medals they&039;ve won, but how far they&039;ve walked.

The biggest fitness news, however, is a brand-new line of running-oriented watches designed with Nike: the Apple Watch Nike+. With neon-colored, perforated designs that make them clear fitness devices, they&039;ll show you your distance and pace at a glance. But they&039;ll go one step further than just showing your stats. They&039;ll try to prompt (guilt) you to work out, with messages like “Are we running today?” and dashboards of your friends&039; progress in comparison, a social “running club” that provides tips and encouragement, and standing invitations to run on Sundays (because, Nike President Trevor Edwards explained, those who run on Sunday are more likely to be active the rest of the week).

“This isn&039;t just a watch, it&039;s your perfect running partner,” Edwards told the crowd. “It&039;s simple, it&039;s fun, it&039;s easy to use, and we think it delivers the best running experience that&039;s out there.”

Priya Anand / BuzzFeed

Running, hiking, Pokémon-catching, swimming, and (previously announced) guided breathing exercises: Apple&039;s vision for its smartwatch is clear. In Williams&039; words, “The Apple Watch is the ultimate device for healthy lives.”

Pokemon Go And Mario Coming To Apple Watch And iOS

Pokémon Go, which has been downloaded more than 500 million times since it was launched in July, will be coming to the Apple Watch by the end of the year, company executives announced onstage at today&;s Apple keynote. The watch game will let people play Pokémon Go in a heads-up mode, highlighting some of the fitness features of the watch and giving players the ability to better appreciate the physical landmarks that appear in the game as Pokéstops.

During walks, players can see how far they have traveled, how manny calories they have burned, and what Pokémon are nearby. John Hanke, — CEO of Niantic labs, which developed the game — said that Pokemon trainers have collectively walked more than 4.6 billion kilometers while playing.

Super Mario Run coming to iOS

Nintendo’s legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto announced that one of the most iconic characters in video-game history is coming to iOS, starting with a game called Super Mario Run. Miyamoto emphasized that the game can be played one-handed — nodding to subway commuters and sandwich-eating players. Super Mario Run also features a battle mode that will let you play friends or others around the world.

Miyamoto said the game would be “coming soon,” in time for the holidays in 2016. It’s also going to have a set price, which means you won’t have to pay to level up as you often do with other games.

This Is How Apple’s New Cord-Free AirPods Work

The iPhone 7 wasn’t Apple’s only big unveil. Today, Apple announced its first new headphone product since 2012, a pair of wireless earbuds called, “AirPods.” The set looks like Apple’s signature white EarPods, but without the cables – and they’re not much larger than the EarPods earpiece either.

Apple’s new wireless headset was announced alongside the headphone jack-less iPhone 7, but will be sold separately. The new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus include lightning port-connected EarPods and an adapter for standard 3.5mm audio cables in-box.

Accelerometers, optical sensors, microphones, and antennas are packed inside the tiny AirPods. When your jaw is moving, the AirPods will optimize the microphones for a phone call by isolating the voice audio. When you remove a bud out of your ears, it’ll pause your audio. When you wear two buds, it’ll deliver audio in stereo, and when you wear one, it’ll play audio in mono. To control music or make calls, simply double tap the AirPods to enable Siri. There are virtually no buttons or switches on the device themselves.

The AirPods include Apple’s first wireless chip, the W1, which was designed to optimize audio performance and battery life over a wireless connection. Both Bluetooth and Apple’s own proprietary technology are used to connect the AirPods instantly to devices. The case connects with iCloud, which helps users switch seamlessly between different iOS devices.

In July, Bluetooth headphone sales, led by Beats products, surpassed other categories for the first time, according to a study by NPD. New Beats headphones will also incorporate the W1 wireless chip, including the Solo 3 Wireless, Power Beats 3 Wireless, and Beats X, a new affordable line of “neckbuds”.

The battery life of each AirPod is five hours – but their charging case (no larger than a pack of dental floss) can hold up to 24 hours of power. Think of the case as a portable battery pack. A quick 15-minute charge in the case provides three hours of listening.
